Auto Painting and Color Matching in Long Island City

Auto painting and color matching starts with your vehicle's factory paint code, but the code is only a starting point. Paint fades with sun exposure and factory batches varied, so a good result depends on blending the new color into adjacent panels rather than matching exactly.

Refinishing is the part of body repair that everybody can judge. Panel gaps and structural work are invisible once the car is back together; paint is not. A repair either disappears in daylight or it announces itself every time the car is parked next to something.

How do you match my car's paint color?

Factory paint codes get you close, but they are a starting point rather than an answer. Two cars leaving the same production line in the same code can differ, and every car on the road has faded to some degree. A five-year-old panel that has spent its life outdoors in New York is not the color it was when it left the factory.

We match by measurement and then spray test cards before touching the vehicle. Metallic, pearl and multi-stage finishes are the ones that punish shortcuts, because the flake has to lie the same way across the repair as it does across the original panel. That is a spraying technique issue as much as a color issue.

We check the match outside in daylight, not just under booth lighting. Paint that matches under one light source and not another is the single most common complaint about cheap refinishing work.

Does new paint need to be blended into the neighboring panels?

On anything other than a solid color, refinishing a single panel edge-to-edge rarely looks right. The correct approach is to blend the new color into the neighboring panels so the transition falls somewhere the eye does not look for it. It uses more material and more time, and it is the difference between a repair and a patch.

What kinds of paint repairs do you do?

  • Spot repairs to scratches, scuffs and stone chips
  • Single panel refinishing after paintless dent repair or dent and filler work
  • Full panel replacement finishing as part of collision repair
  • Bumper covers, which are plastic and take paint differently from steel or aluminum panels
  • Corrosion repairs (see rust repair) where paint has already failed

Why is New York so hard on car paint?

Road salt is the main enemy, and it works through any break in the surface. A stone chip on the hood or a scrape along a sill is a paint job in its first winter and a metalwork job by the second. Sun exposure on cars parked outdoors does the rest, dulling clear coat and fading reds and dark blues faster than most owners expect.

If you are having other work done, it is worth asking us to look over the paint at the same time. Sealing a chip costs very little; repairing what it becomes does not.

How do I get a written estimate?

Bring the car in and we will give you a written estimate before any work starts. If you are coming from Manhattan, the Queens-Midtown Tunnel and the Queensboro Bridge both put you here in a few minutes. See our auto body shop in Manhattan page.

Why doesn't my factory paint code give a perfect match?

Your paint code identifies the formulation applied when the vehicle was built. It does notdescribe the paint on your car today, and on any vehicle more than a year or two old those aredifferent things.

Ultraviolet light breaks down pigment and clear coat over time, and it does so unevenly. Apanel that has faced the sun has faded measurably more than one that has not. Manufacturersalso produce paint in batches that vary within tolerance, and many publish several variantsunder a single code to reflect that spread. Identifying which variant your vehicle received isdone by spraying test cards and comparing them against the car under controlled light.

How is aged paint repaired if an exact match is not possible?

Because an exact match to aged paint is often unattainable, quality refinishing does notattempt one. The new color is faded gradually into the adjacent panels, with clear coatapplied across the whole area, so there is no boundary for the eye to catch.

The eye detects a sudden edge far more readily than a gradual change. A slight differencespread across a blend is invisible; the same difference at a panel gap is obvious from adistance. This is why an estimate for one damaged panel often includes labor on the panel nextto it, and why declining that blend to save money reliably produces a visible repair.

Why are metallic and pearl paints harder to match?

Metallic paint contains fine aluminum flake, and how those flakes lie in the filmdetermines the appearance. Sprayed too wet they lie flat and the color reads dark. Sprayed toodry they sit at varied angles and the color reads light and mottled. Both faults use exactlythe correct paint and still fail to match, which is why technique carries as much weight as themix.

Pearl and tri coat finishes add a translucent mid coat, so the final appearance depends onthe number of passes as well as the base beneath. These require spray out cards to establishthe correct build before the vehicle is touched.

Touch-up, panel refinish or full respray?

The size of the damage decides the job. Most accident paintwork is a panel refinish blended into the panels next to it.

JobWhat it fixesWhat to expect
Touch-upSmall chips and light scratchesHides the damage, a close look will still show it
Panel refinishScrapes, repaired dents, a replaced panelColor matched and blended into the next panels

Auto Painting and Color Matching: Questions

Why can't auto painting and color matching just use the factory code?

Auto painting and color matching starts with the code, but paint fades with sun exposure and factory batches varied, so the shade is measured on your car and adjusted before it is sprayed.

Why does the shop paint panels next to the damaged one?

Blending into the adjacent panels hides the transition, so the eye does not catch a slight difference between old and new paint. It is standard practice, especially on metallic finishes.

Can you paint just a bumper or a mirror?

Yes. We paint single panels, bumpers and trim as well as larger areas, and the estimate tells you which adjacent panels need blending.

How much does auto painting and color matching cost?

Auto painting and color matching is priced once we know the car and the job, so we do not publish a price list. Call (212) 629-1028 for a price.
