Insurance Claims and Free Estimates in Long Island City
We provide free written estimates and work directly with your insurer on a claim. In New York you choose the repair shop, and an insurer may recommend a network facility but cannot require one as a condition of settling a claim you are covered for.
Most people deal with an auto body claim rarely enough that the process never becomes familiar. This page covers what actually happens, so there are fewer surprises.
Do I get a written estimate before work starts?
We provide a written estimate before any work starts. For anything beyond surface damage that means removing trim or a bumper cover to look underneath, because estimating a modern car from the outside is guesswork: the components that add cost are behind the panel, not on it.
If we find additional damage once the car is stripped, you hear about it before we proceed, not afterwards. Supplements to an insurance estimate are normal and expected; being told about them late is not.
Do you work with my insurance company?
We accept work from major insurance carriers and can communicate with the adjuster directly if you would rather not manage it yourself. Two points worth knowing:
- You choose the shop. In New York, the decision about where your vehicle is repaired is yours. An insurer may recommend a shop; it cannot require one.
- A cheaper estimate is not the same repair. Differences between estimates usually come down to whether sensors are being recalibrated, whether adjacent panels are being blended, and whether parts are new, aftermarket or used. Those are worth comparing directly.
Can you handle a claim if my parked car was hit in Manhattan?
A large share of the claims we handle involve no second driver at all. The car was parked and something hit it. Garage damage, delivery vehicles, and hit-and-runs on residential streets all fall into this category, and they are usually handled under collision or comprehensive cover depending on the circumstances. We are used to documenting this kind of damage for a claim where there is no other party to exchange details with.
What should I bring for an insurance claim?
- Your policy number and claim number if one has been opened
- Any photographs taken at the scene, particularly of the position of the vehicles
- The police report number where one exists
What should I do if my car is not drivable?
Call us on (212) 629-1028. Our towing runs from 8 AM to 8 PM every day across Manhattan and Queens, and because we tow to our own shop your vehicle is not accruing storage fees in a third-party yard while the claim is arranged. For the repair itself, see auto body shop and collision repair.
If the car cannot be driven to us, tow truck NYC operator A1 Towing NYC recovers it. Structural and insurance heavy collision work is referred to auto body shop NYC specialists A1 Collision NY.
Why can a repair estimate change once work starts?
A first estimate is written from what can be seen before anything is taken apart. Vehiclesare engineered to absorb impact by deforming, so damage propagates behind the panels that tookthe hit. Brackets crack, absorbers collapse, and mounting points shift in ways that are simplynot visible until the cover comes off.
The document that records that additional damage is called a supplement, and it is a normalpart of almost every substantial repair. It is not a shop revising its price upward. It is theshop documenting what the vehicle actually needs so the insurer can authorize it. An estimatethat never changes on a significant repair usually means the vehicle was never opened up,which is the less reassuring situation of the two.
What do you handle on my insurance claim?
- We photograph and document all damage, including what is found during disassembly.
- We write the estimate and submit supplements directly to your adjuster.
- We negotiate the repair method and parts specification with the insurer on your behalf.
- We tell you when a supplement is submitted and when it is approved, because those gaps arewhere a timeline quietly extends.
- You choose the shop, decide on any betterment or upgrade, and settle your deductible.
What should I check in the parts lines of an estimate?
Two details on an estimate matter more than the total. The first is the parts specification.Codes on each line indicate whether the estimate assumes original manufacturer parts, aftermarket equivalents, or recycled components. Most standard policies allow the insurer tospecify parts of like kind and quality, so aftermarket parts may be the default unless yourpolicy carries an original parts endorsement.
The second is the repair or replace decision on each damaged panel. Repairing a panel isusually cheaper and is often entirely appropriate. On a panel with structural involvement or asensor mounted in it, replacement may be the correct call, and that is a conversation worthhaving before the work starts rather than afterwards.
Is there a limit on rental car coverage during a repair?
Most policies cap rental reimbursement by day count or dollar amount. Check the limit atthe start rather than in week three, particularly if a part is on back order. Where a delay isoutside your control and documented, insurers will sometimes extend a limit, and thatconversation is far easier before the cap is reached than after it.
Insurer's network shop or a shop you choose?
In New York you choose where your car is repaired. An insurer can recommend a shop in its network, but it cannot require you to use one.
| Question | Insurer's network shop | A shop you choose |
|---|---|---|
| Who picks it | Recommended by the insurer | You do |
| Who the shop has an agreement with | The insurer | You, the customer |
| Estimate | Often written under the insurer's program rules | Written by the shop and reviewed by the adjuster |
| Hidden damage found later | Handled within the program | Documented and sent to the adjuster as a supplement |
